I just recently joined dreamwidth and have been struggling to understand how it works entirely. I've got a grasp on my own profile and entries but don't necessarily understand the communities on here. Are communities like group accounts? Where everyone can post about a certain topic? is that the main way to socialise on here? I feel i'm coming off really old and confused but i'm actually 19 haha. Please do let me know!

newcomers has lots of resources about how to use Dreamwidth and where to find things you'll enjoy here. If you're coming from Tumblr, soc_puppet is posting tutorials for that angle.

The Follow Friday Master Post has lists of active communities by topic where you can look for some based on your interests. Many bloggers use recurring posts to pin down their key interests and maintain activity, which is also a good source of inspiration if you aren't sure what you want to post yet.

Yes, exactly. Most communities let all members post, but some only allow one or a few people to post, and others let anyone post even non-members. Some have fairly broad topics while others are much narrower. Certain types, like recommendation or review communities, have a specific format for posting but most do not. Check the profile and any sticky posts for each community's parameters.

It is one way. Communities are good for meeting people with common interests, hanging out in a group, sharing news, coordinating activities, etc.

There are also memes that get passed around, like a questionnaire or a friending meme. Love memes have a single post, but usually include a banner that will link back to the meme post so folks can boost the signal in their blog. You will likely see these on your friends page as many people do them at the same time.

Similarly there are events. These often have a community but don't always. Mostly they rely on people doing things in their own blog, but as with memes, you'll see multiple participants doing them. Just past is the sunshine_revival from July. The next big one will be the snowflake_challenge in January.

Some blogs also have activities that invite people to hang out or share news. My Recurring Posts include some like that with Good News, Hard Things, and Cuddle Party.

There's a new writing challenge community at 1character!

polyamships for any and all poly shipping needs. Somewhat active, it hosts monthly and annual events, but we're still kinda small on DW and not many people are posting yet, but there are active members. Promote your poly events, works, and get recs for canon polyamory media.

fourormore for any and all ships with 4 or more people. Currently hosting the Four or More 2025 Bingo. Participate of the event or promote your individual works featuring complicated relationships between 4+ people here.

thecluster a Sense8-themed comm that a friend of mine found recently and we're trying to revive. For fans of the Netflix show Sense8. Fic, art, vids, and meta allowed.

summerofthe69 has a double theme as we close in on the end of the fest: Fighting or Fucking 69 and Monsterfucker 69!

Tropefest 69 is in its last few days, and on Monday, the next-to-last theme, Back End 69, will open.
