Sorry, if I'm stepping on any toes.  That said I'm looking for recs. My friends page is a little bare, and my searches always seem to yield the same old results. Help!  Please rec some 'must read' or interesting journals and communities to follow.
What would you tell a newbie to check out?

Have you checked out poetree? It's a community space for "for discussing and sharing poetry". Unlike the similarly named poetry (also worth checking out), people may post "unpublished" poems and dreamwidth-generated content. There are challenges with fun!prizes! and this past week has been themed around Emotional Intimacy. It is frelling incredible. We'd love to see you around...^_^

What sorts of things are you interested in?

Interests--I've been stuck in the rut of searching for the same ones over and over again. 'Exercise, fitness, health, goals, cooking.' When faced with the 'interests' search box, I can't seem to think of anything else.

I definitely need to spice up my interests. I would say suggest anything you can think of, but that's not true.

I'm an able-bodied, basic cable, non-anime, non-video gamer, non-lgbt, non-depressed, occasional prompt filler(original only), movie watcher, book reader, and avoider of Twilight and Hunger Games series. Open to tv/movie fandom discussions, but follow fic at AOO. Although fic kink memes can be fun to lurk at. Real life and the past can also be good reads.

Sorry for length, once I got started I couldn't stop.

A few months back kouredios had a huge friending meme that's a treasure trove of new people to find: http://kouredios.dreamwidth.org/226094.html

It skews heavily fannish, but not entirely, and people mentioned all kinds of things they're into. I found a bunch of new people to follow.

I second the idea of looking at the members' pages for comms you're interested in, even if the comms themselves are kinda quiet.

For specific comms, I second ebooks, bitesizedcleaning, and caturday, and add:

books - because paper books are also <3

fancake - multi-fandom fic recommendations, based on a monthly theme (the current theme is "small fandoms")

meme_of_interest - the Person of Interest kink meme (I just noticed you like POI *g* hi!)

rainbowfic - I've been seeing this on my Network; looks like an original-fic challenge comm

daily_prompt - General prompts for anyone, any fandom/original

metaquotes - Not hugely active, but people post intriguing/funny quotes from around DW here

exercise_every_day - Another achievable-goals comm (because you listed health in your interests)

science - for scientists on Dreamwidth (and anyone who's interested in science)

flaneurs - I'm just gonna let the first part of the profile explain this: "This is a community for people who enjoy what, for want of a better term, might be called "urban rambling". We like to wander through cities, towns, and the built environment in general, driven by the joy of serendipity, the urge to explore, or the satisfying completism of walking down every street in a given postal district."

actyourwage - You mentioned RL here and goals in your interest, so: this is a no-pressure, supportive comm about handling finances and getting out of debt.

COOKING! *ahem* This is a topic of great interest to me, and we have several amazing communities on DW dedicated to just that. My personal perennial favorites are boilingwater (for the asking of questions about cooking, all ability levels, and sharing of basic tips) and omnomnom (recipes, omg the recipes yesssssss). And yes, seconding the rec re: investigating kouredios's friending meme.

Also know that all communities have their own "read" page where you can see public posts from members. I bet you could pick up some more people to read that way.

You can also go look at the reading pages of people you find interesting to see what THEY are reading (public posts only, naturally).

You can add ?show=P (only journals) or ?show=C (only communities) to the end of any read URL filter down to specific types.

Skimming latest can be rewarding: http://www.dreamwidth.org/latest (If you find spam, report it so it can be deleted!)

Also remember that if there is a blog outside of DW that you follow, you can use the feed feature to read it on your reading page, too:

kink_bingo If you like reading kinky stories, people post them here. Also meta about kink. Original fic is welcome there too, although it is mostly fan fic.

common_nature is a nice community where people post photos/art/descriptions of their daily interactions with nature.
